“There’s a man on the line who wants to speak with you, sir,” Woodbridge’s secretary told her boss.

“Who is it?”

“He didn’t say, sir, but I’m to tell you that the subject matter is the G-Team and the thing on Rikers Island.”

Woodbridge sank back into his chair. “I’ll take the call.”

“Hello, Mr. Woodbridge.” The man at the other end of line spoke in a whisper which made his voice difficult to recognize. “I hope I’m not keeping you from something important.”

“Are you crazy, calling here?” Woodbridge hissed into the phone. “What is it that you want?”

“I think I deserve a small bonus, now that the G-Team is history.”

“Shut your mouth, and for Christ’s sake don’t mention any names. You’ve already been amply paid and you should be satisfied.”

“In that case, I may be forced to continue this conversation with the press. The public would be more than surprised if they were to learn a few dubious facts about you. Can you see the headlines? That would be great fun … at least it would be fun for me.”

There was no response for several seconds. Then Woodbridge decided to make a move. He said, “You’re right, I think a small bonus would be appropriate. How much?”

“One hundred thousand dollars.”

Woodbridge stopped breathing for a few seconds.

“As soon as I have the money, you’ll never hear from me again.”

“What can guarantee me that?”

“No one … you’ll have to trust my word as an honorable man.”

“Honorable!?” Woodbridge said incredulously.

“Don’t be like that. The amount I want is nothing compared to the benefits you’ll enjoy from my success on Rikers Island.”

“When and where do you want the money?”

“At midnight, on Long Island. There’s an abandoned barn a half mile northwest of Bay Shore … you can’t miss it, it’s right near the coast. And don’t forget the money … all of it.”

Cotton ended the conversation and dialed another number.

“What is it?” a grumpy male voice said.

“Do you have any plans for tonight?” Cotton asked in a very amiable tone.

It was just before midnight. Cotton was sneaking over a sand dune on Long Island. He had parked his car several hundred yards away, completely out of sight.

He watched the appointed meeting place attentively. To the left of the barn, the dunes continued onward until they disappeared into the darkness. To the right there was a long stretch of beach with the Atlantic surf rolling in and out. The only structure for far and wide was the barn with the damaged roof and blackened walls caused by some long-ago fire.

Cotton peered at the two main doors hanging loosely from their hinges; one was a little bit ajar. There were no signs of any other human beings around.

“I take it that there’s no bar in that dump over there,” Dillagio whispered, crawling closer to Cotton. He unscrewed his flask of booze and took a swig.

“The only things inside are rats.” Cotton took out his pistol and released the safety. “A bunch of the four-legged variety and one of the two-legged kind.
